DIY Home Decor: Home Decorating Ideas, South American Style

It is easy to create some desert-inspired decor for cheap, and even if your taste is not the spicy Mexican flavor traditionally adorned with bright colors and geometric designs, you can personalize it! You don't even have to be that crafty for this do-it-yourself decor, and it's cheap!

Here's what you need (pictured to the right):

• pots
• craft paint
• paintbrushes
• rope
• glue gun
• scissors
• spray enamel

Here's how to do it:

1. Gather your materials.
2. Wash the pots (I used some that had been hanging around for, well, years.)
3. Pick a design and paint it.
4. To put ropes on your pot, measure the length you need ahead of time. If you want three layers, cut three ropes in the size of each layer instead of wrapping it around consecutively.
5. Spray on the clear enamel, let it dry, and you're done!

Tips:

• If you want to make geometric designs, it helps to use masking tape. I didn't use it for the triangles (to the right) because I preferred the look that came from freehand-ing it, but I did use tape for the top and bottom to create a crisp line and leave the bare clay pot near the paint.
• If you make designs, try outlining them with a complimentary color - it really makes them pop and adds a great accent to your design. I used yellow to outline the alternating triangles which are gold and yellow-green.
• Trim off the scraggly pieces of rope that have frayed before you spray on the clear enamel.
